I was once roleplaying with person who first claimed to be 18 in my late 20s, only to later confess they were 17. It had me feel disgusted, since our characters had nsfw situations and made me drop the idea that 'if they are 18, it's fine to roleplay with them'.

I tend not to ask and instead judge people by how they act, but yes, it's a scare-off

I wouldn't say there is a problem persay with younger rps, but there is definitely a deffrince. A lot of things I m used to as kinda givens for tropes, themes, chr and such are very diffrently seen by the youth. Things I've been ok with forever, are changing and not ok anymore. It's all things to think about

Much like TerraTX, I also tend not to judge others on how they act and behave in PM's and the RP. Luckily, up to this point, though, I haven't had any problems with those I write with. All seem to act and write in mature manners, so yeah, I've got no complaints with any writers, old or young, yet. ^^

I think everyone needs to start somewhere and sometimes working with experience role players helps new hobbiests grow but I can see the cons to it- it does feel like newer role players are used to quicker and constant interactions. There’s still some amazing younger role players though! It’s just giving people a chance and having some patience (and I do mean that for both older AND newer role players).

Thank you to everyone that's replied. I'm glad to see that there's still a community here that's active and responding to things outside their immediate 1x1's. xD
Very surprised by the responses because I was expecting the usual "I roleplay with anyone, age is just a number" kind of responses, but it looks like people are a lot more pickier with their partners nowadays than how I remember things.

Thanks again to those who replied, and just to be clear I understand it's a general preference and not some kind of golden rule for most. New blood is always nice in communities, and I'm sure that most of us would be happy to interact with younger (18+) people if they met standards or were eager to learn. (Note to self, use threads not this 420 character limited space next time) xD

I've only been role-playing for about 4 to 5 years at most, and I am extremely grateful to the partners who took a chance on me, because we all do start somewhere. I was let's see 22 when I started

Due to the NSFW content I prefer someone closer to my age
28 to older. More life experience as well, and more in common as well.

At this age I would not RP with an 18 year old. I can hardly even make conversation with someone that age let alone manage to RP with them. All my life I have always chosen people who were or who seemed to be close to my age.

I don't ask. (ppl lie about it anyway). Generally, if the writing and comprehension are okay, I'll play. TBH, it's the OOC that can stop a game if the person is clearly 'young in the head', so to speak. I'm all for chatting and sharing but some of the younger gen are a tad sensitive, needy or flighty. Like playing with the 'share a lot' care-bear which seriously hits my no thank you button. lol.

I know this is late to the conversation. I just came back from a wedding (on top of many other things). Age isn't a factor to me personally, when considering RP partners. but I think my request that both our characters be over 25 detracts from many 18 year olds. (Personal preference). Though due to issues with maturity I've personally experienced, I due prefer not to befriend people under 25.
